There are two types of Christians: Mary and Martha. Faithful sisters in the Lord. But they have two different attitudes:
Marys:
They sit at the Lord's feet and listen to what He teaches. They are the
ones who have discovered that one thing that matters.
Marthas:
They are so caught up in what they are doing for the Lord they forget
to actually sit at His feet. Like Martha, they are 'so distracted with
the big dinner they are preparing'.
These
Christians are so distracted from the Lord, so caught up with ministry
work that they don't spend time with Him anymore. They seem more in love
with the Lord's work than they are with the Lord Himself. No time for
fellowship. No time to commute. No time to sit at the Master's feet and
listen to His words drip off His mouth.
To them that is secondary. Their first priority is the 'Lord's work'.
But
Jesus would prefer it the other way round. We listen to Him. We spend
time with Him before we go ahead and do. Cos when we sit at His feet, we
are refreshed, rejuvenated, transformed, we receive directions - a
template of what God wants us to do and run with it.
That
was the secret Mary realized. So many Christians have realized this
secret too and they run with it. I can imagine Martha bustling all over
the house and then she turned to Jesus to complain about her 'lazy'
sister Mary saying, "Lord, doesn't it seem unfair to You that my sister
just sits there while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me."
To
Martha, what Mary was doing was insignificant. She refers to it as
'just sitting there' while she was the one doing what was significant -
the work. But Jesus thought otherwise. He said to her, "My dear Martha,
you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one
thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it and it will
not be taken away from her."
Jesus
said only one thing is worth being concerned about. Only one thing
matters. Only one. 'Only' means nothing else but that. To Jesus, only one
thing is really important in a Christian's life - knowing Him! Listening
to Him. Learning from Him. Spending time with Him. Being with Him.
Fellowshipping with Him. Sitting 'just there' at His feet.
Do
you enjoy sitting 'just there' at the Master's feet listening to His
voice? Or do you like to bustle around the house in the Name of God like
Martha did without paying attention to the words of Jesus?
One
thing really matters: knowing Jesus, the Wisdom and knowledge of God!
Get into the Word this year, next year, next two years and for the rest
of your life. Know Jesus cos when you do, He will hand to you the secret
of doing the work the way the Father wants it to be done!
"Mary discovered it and it will not be taken from her."
So are you a 'Mary' Christian or a 'Martha' Christian?
