I woke up to the news of Mugabe's loss of power yesterday and I thought Christmas came early. Lol. Sweet news. It made my day. It was high time.
Here is the story of Mugabe as published by Mirror Online:
Initially hailed a revolutionary hero after Zimbabwe’s independence, Robert Mugabe became one of the world’s most brutal dictators, with tens of thousands killed under his rule.
As millions of his people live in dire poverty, he has enjoyed a lavish lifestyle they have been forced to fund since he
took power in 1987.
Mugabe has been accused of using death squads to silence opponents, rigging elections and deliberately sinking the country’s fragile economy just to stay in power.
More than 20,000 people were killed by his feared Fifth Brigade in the 80s.
Britain once compared him to Adolf Hitler, but he took it as a compliment – claiming the genocidal Nazi had sought justice. He said: “If that is Hitler, then let me be a Hitler tenfold.”
He has faced calls to be tried for crimes against humanity and has been condemned for corruption and the suffering of his people. The exact death toll under his regime is unknown.
In 1993, Mugabe forced white farmers to give their land to black Zimbabweans – a move which led the country in economic chaos.
Since then he has presided over mass inflation and food shortages.
During the 2002 and 2008 elections against Morgan Tsvangirai he was widely accused by election monitors of vote fraud. Some human rights groups said he set up “torture camps”.
Tsvangirai claimed victory in 2008 but pulled out, claiming it had “been marred by the widespread intimidation, torture, mutilation and murder of his supporters”.
Mugabe has been accused of stealing from the country’s coffers – with an estimated personal wealth of £8million.
He famously dined on elephant and lion meat at his lavish 90th birthday celebrations.
His wife – who he had been trying to line up as his successor – has been dubbed “Gucci Grace” due to her expensive shopping trips.
*Pity that some people will hold on to power like it's some kind of family business.
