I promised I was going to share my personal thoughts on tithing and here it is:
I was reading Matthew 25:31-46 and I saw that Jesus, on the final
judgement separated the sheep from the goats. And this was what He said
to the sheep who stood at His right hand:
"Come,
you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you
from the creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you fed Me. I was
thirsty, and you gave Me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited Me
into your home. I was naked, and you gave Me clothing. I was sick, and
you cared for me. I was in prison, and you visited Me."
There
was no mention of "when you went to church, you paid your tithe etc."
That was Jesus highlighting what really matters. The whole essence of
our Christian faith - love. Doing good. Being a blessing. Telling people
about Him through our actions and our giving. This is what matters to
God. This is the life He has called us to live.
These
past few weeks, a lot of things have been said and is still being said
on social media concerning tithing, as to whether it is right or wrong
to tithe; whether it is mandatory or not. Highly controversial topic,
this tithing.
Some say it's wrong to tithe and
they gave their Scriptural backing. Some insist it okay to tithe. I
remember one saying only matured Christians tithe. Hmmm...
Wake
up Christians! We are fighting over trivialities when we should be out
there working for God. We are conducting a debate whether we should
tithe or not, when we should be pursuing what really matters. How many
of us actually show love to the people around us? How many of us,
tithers and non tithers, actually live by God's Word?
See
us struggling over a piece of meat like children over a non-issue. One
thing I do know is this: your salvation is not tied to your tithing!
I
tithe, oh yes I do. But I don't do it because it's a law I must keep.
In this new covenant, all that is required of me is to believe and out
of my faith flows my works of love towards God and humanity.
I
tithe because I am disciplining myself to give something out of my
monthly or daily earnings to God cos I know whenever I give, from my
heart, I will be blessed in return. So tithing teaches me to let go of
what I personally call God's sacred portion. It's like saying, "This one
belongs to God" and I must give it to Him; a pure act of worship that comes from my heart. This is besides my giving to
others cos a Christian should be a giver.
Tithing must come from your heart. It
should not be imposed. No be by force. If you in anyway feel it's a
burden to tithe, then don't tithe cos truth is you will be wasting your
money if you do! Why? Because you are not giving it from your heart.
Dear
Church, stop fighting over frivolities and let's get to doing good to
others in the name of Jesus. Yes, LOVE. That's the word. Let's love
people and draw them to Jesus through our simple actions of love. It's
our lifestyle.
We go out there and do good.
Say a kind word to someone, give to those who are in need. Go out and
live in His name. Tithing won't save you. Your faith will. Let your
faith propel you to do what God needs you to do. Live love cos that’s
the only way you can bring God glory.
It is
our actions that make our faith complete. That is to say: faith without
actions means nothing. It's dead. Your actions is the proof of your
faith.
Pursue what matters. If you must tithe, do it not because your
pastor coerced you to or because you are afraid if you don't pay your
tithe things will be tight for you. If you must tithe, do it from your
heart as an act of worship to God.
It is impossible for God to bless
your giving when you don't give from your heart.
