Ada came in distraught,
sad and deeply hurt. This was the umpteenth job interview and the 'ogas'
always want the same thing - sex. And for the umpteenth time she walked
out on them without looking back. She was not ready to compromise her
faith in Jesus for a 'mess of stew' like Esau.
But
things are getting really frustrating. The pressure on her is high.
Mama needs to be taken care of, her siblings need financial assistance.
She is the first child and the only graduate her poor single mom managed
to send to the University with her akara business in the hope that when
she graduates, Ada will assist her with her younger siblings.
It's
been 1 year and 6 months since Ada graduated yet no job. She had been
every where literally. Some call, some don't. If she pulls through an
interview, they demand sex from her. Sex has become the hush-hush
criteria for getting a job these days.
She is
torn between staying true to her faith and giving in to the mounting
sexual pressure for her family's sake. Her father died since she was 12
and that was 14 years ago.
Then
came those whispers again, "Forget it! You will never find a job. You
better let go of this your so called Jesus. What has He even done for
you but plunge your life into deeper and deeper misery?!"
Those tiny voices were clawing at her sanity, disturbing her, tugging her, pushing her.
But then the still small voice that always washed away her fears came to her.
"Have faith. Have faith. Stay strong."
Ada
looked at her phone contacts. Who does she call? Her eyes fell on Mr
Ogaga. She had only met him once at a friend's wedding. She texted him,
her hands clammy with moist.
PLEASE SIR HELP ME. I DESPERATELY NEED A JOB
Few minutes later she got a reply,
OK. SEE ME TOMORROW AT MY OFFICE. NO 1 MARSHAL STR VI
She could not believe it. Sincerely, she was half expecting his response, and so fast?!
The
next day, with her clothes well ironed and all Ada stepped out
clutching her CV. The receptionist directed her to Mr Ogaga's office.
"He is expecting you," she said with a smile.
Ada
knocked and walked in. Impressive. A big office, italian furniture,
leather setees by the corner, a well arranged table and a fridge. Mr
Ogaga must be doing really well for himself.
"Come on in! " He beamed at her." Please sit down. What can offer you? "
"Nothing
sir," Ada in an almost inaudible voice. Mr Ogaga laughed, strolled
round the table to her and sat on the edge of the table in front of
her. He was 30 something and looking good in his well tailored suit.
Breathtaking.
"So let's go straight to why you are here. You want a job?"
"Yes sir. I have been to several places but..."
"I will give you a job," Ogaga cut in.
"Sir?! " Ada thought she didn't hear right.
"I will give you a job," he reiterated. Ada was thrown into a joyous frenzy.
"Oh, thank you, thank you sir!" Her heart palpitated such joy.
"But
there is a price," Ogaga moved closer and gently caressed her face.
Ada cringed at his touch, moving her chair back slightly away from him.
She knew what the price was. No need to be told.
Ogaga laughed, obviously amused.
"You
don't expect me to give you a job without you giving me something back
in return, do you? Come on! You are not a small girl. Every woman will
do anything to get the juicy job am offering you. You as my personal
assistant and it comes with lots of benefits - good pay, a free
accomodation, a car and paid trips round the world. All you need do is
have sex with me and it’s all yours!"
'Here we go again,' Ada thought frantically.
The
job was indeed juicy and outrageously tempting. Imagine what the job
will do for her and her family. How can she resist? And it’s all hers if
only she can...suddenly, Ada had a brain reset. What exactly is she
doing?! Was she really considering sleeping with this man?!
Defiantly she stood up from her seat and looked Ogaga straight in the eye.
"Sir,
I must admit your offer is tempting but if you are asking me to choose
between Jesus and your offer, I choose Jesus. Life is hard for me, I
know but I am not willing to compromise my faith just to get a better
life. I will rather wait for that job God has prepared for me. Thank you
for your time sir."
With that, without even waiting for him to reply, Ada turned around and made for the door.
"Congratulations,
the job is yours!" Ogaga announced stopping her on her tracks. He stood
up from the table, his countenance had changed from the flirtatious
look to an impressed, sober look.
"What?" Ada barely asked. Surely she was dreaming. She turned slowly around to face him, surprise drawn all over her face.
"Ada,
you are the right candidate for the job. For years I have searched for
someone like you with integrity, never willing to compromise under
pressure. You just passed the interview. Meet the secretary and she will
fill you in. See you tomorrow and have a good day. "
Ada
was beside herself. Now she knew for sure she wasn't dreaming. What?!
What?!! What?!!! Finally, God came through for her. Finally, she gets a
job, not any kind of job. An awesome job that God had reserved for her
all these while and she didn't know it.
But
it took God only one day to give her more than she ever dreamed of
because she was steadfast and refused to compromise her faith.
What
if she had given in to pressure at this last minute? She would have
missed this beautiful opportunity. It's pays to be faithful to the
end.
When Ada thought God was done with her,
He showed her He was just getting started cos in few months, Ogaga
proposed to her and they got married a year later.
So,
what's the moral of the story? Stay faithful; ditch the bypaths and the
shortcuts. When the pressure is high, don't compromise. It's only a sign
that your miracle is right round the corner.
*When you choose to stay true to Jesus' standard, He will stay true to you.*
Good one! Lesson learnt
