EPISODE ONE:
"Why
me?" Steph asked, her eyes barely looking at his face like she was too
ashamed to even meet his eyes but she could feel them on her face almost
caressing her and tingling her mixed emotions.
"Because
I love you. Because you are the most amazing woman I have ever met," Ed
confessed, his voice passionate and determined at the same time.
"You can't possibly love me like this!" she was aghast, her eyes moist with tears.
"Ed,"
her eyes rose to meet his for the first time after he threw his
unbelievable question. "...you don't know what you are asking for."
"I
do Steph. I know exactly what I am asking for. I know exactly what I
want and it is you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you!"
He
was pretty convincing but a part of her just don't want to believe that
Ed would choose her. Of all the pretty, wholesome women out there, he
would choose to settle for her. Her?! She who finds it hard to look at
herself in the mirror? As a matter of fact, the mirror was her worst
enemy because it reminds her of something she has struggled for years to
forget. Each time she looked into it, her deformed face stared right
back at her making her loathe her very existence. The burnt patch and
crinkled skin on her once pretty face down to her neck was a constant
reminder of a night she wished never happened.
"Which
man will ever look at me with me looking this way?" She can't recall
how many times she had asked herself that question or the countless
times she had contemplated suicide.
Eight
years ago, she was in a fire which burnt her so bad she was almost
unrecognizable. She survived it and that was a miracle. Yet, with her
present physical state, she felt she was better off dead. She couldn’t
bear the curious stares, the low-toned back talks and the pathetic glint
she sees sometimes in the eyes of those who behold her.
It
infuriated her to be felt sorry for. For God's sake she was not an
invalid but a victim of circumstance. She hated being made to feel she
was handicapped and she had worked hard to earn where she is right now.
In
her 2nd year, her room mate had left the midnight candle burning and
slept off. All Steph could remember was the darkness, the smoke, the
smell of burning flesh, the yells of confusion and the sound of people
trying to break down the door. When they finally succeeded she had
passed out only to wake up on the hospital bed to be told her roomie had
died in the fire.
