It is very natural to have a sex urge. We all do. As long as you are a man, temptations will come once in a while but whether to give in or not to what our hormones is saying at that moment is entirely up to us. Sexual sin is so easy. Today, it is one sin that has crippled many that many have become helpless towards it. So why fight something they cannot overcome? But that’s not what God’s Word says. The Scriptures tells us that it is very possible to live a sexually pure life even if we have severally given in to it in the past. In overcoming sexual sin, you must:
- See sex outside the bounds of marriage as sin. Because first and foremost is the recognition that fornication/adultery is wrong, against God’s principles and should be done away with completely in our lives. When we develop that defeat mentality and helplessness towards sexual sin, it is like we have already conceded defeat without even knowing it. We have willingly surrendered to it in order that it can rule our bodies. We become literally slaves to sex.
- Make a deliberate decision in your heart to remain sexually pure and back it up with God’s Word. It works really. Being a naïve young girl during my first year in school, I could easily have been preyed upon but each time God’s Word kept me. Whenever a young man approached me with his sweet tongue in an attempt to sway me heart and seduce me, God’s Word in my spirit always set up a resistance. It just erupts from my heart and reminds me that ‘my body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit. Destroy this Temple and God will destroy you because God’s Temple is holy and you are that Temple.’ In that way I never gave in to their advances. As a man, I would easily have fallen but knowing how weak I was, I turned to God for help because I knew it would take only His grace alone through Christ Jesus to keep me from falling into fornication. And indeed God never disappoints( I am a witness).
- Another thing, keep sexual thoughts far from you. Yes. When all you think, see and hear is sex, it weakens your defenses and makes you extra vulnerable. Fill your mind instead with God’s Word. Get occupied with things profitable for your life. Don’t waste your thoughts on sex. Keep your mind from it and focus on other things. It makes you strong and resilient.
- Keeping in mind that we are only but man, it is wisdom to keep away from people, places or things that can cause you to fall into sexual sin.
Someone will say it is easier said than done. I agree. It is not easy but it has to be done but not by human strength. When God has given us all that pertains to life and godliness in Jesus, what more do we lack? We have no excuses whatsoever, for the life God has called us is to holy living and He has equipped us in every way to ensure that we live that life. One of the fruit that the Holy Spirit produces in us is self control. So letting go our limited human strength, we delve into God’s unlimited strength and power, because without God, it is actually impossible to be sexually pure. It takes us working together with His Holy Spirit to make this happen. Let’s stop giving excuses and start taking responsibility.
