When the news about Korede Bello, his controversial performance in a church in Lagos and how it was criticized by a U.S based Pastor broke, I asked, “ …but who is Korede Bello?” Well up until then I didn’t know him, never heard any of his songs but from then on I wanted so badly to hear that particular music that he sang in church called ‘Godwin’.Days later I listened to the song on radio and yeah, I loved what I heard. It was tasty. Unique. The young man was sure talented. Impressive. A real inspiring song.
Rather than the controversy to stop the young man , it only succeeded in making him popular, shooting him into the limelight (No wonder some celebrities feed off on controversies. It seems to keep them relevant and they enjoy the attention it brings them). Personally I have no problem with secular music, though I am not a fan for the genre, but as long as the music is not lewd and immoral, I think secular music is beautiful.
Now back to Korede Bello’s performance of ‘Godwin’ in church, was it supposed to be a ministration or an entertainment? Though I know the church of all places is no place for entertainment, where we make our body feel good and leave us spiritually dry. Rather the church is a place for spiritual upliftment and building up. It is the holy gathering of God’s people in His presence and that makes it important who comes on to the altar to minister to the souls of the people. I am not here to judge whether Korede Bello is qualified to minister or not, after all I don’t even know much about him nor his spiritual life. But before someone comes to minister to the congregation, it is necessary to ask, "Does this person have a personal relationship with Jesus? Is he saved?” By their fruits you shall know them. God sees the heart, what we see are the hands. You can’t be born again and yet sing lewd lyrics, use half-naked video vixens in your music video and live an alien lifestyle contrary to what God Himself has commanded, the same God you claim to love and fear. It is impossible. Christianity is a lifestyle. We cannot separate God from our business or secular life. Someone will say, “ It is just business. Real life, I don’t do that. We just use those girls in our music videos to get more patronage. That is what the people want, so we give them what they want. Sex appeal!” But what do you preach or say to people who watch your music videos? Do you whet their sexual appetite by what they see and hear? Do you know how many people that will probably fall when they see the same bro who ministered at church singing immoral songs with slutty looking girls? Ministers ought to be examples, someone whose life preaches what he believes. Our life as Christians ought to preach Christ whether in church or outside church, business, secular and everywhere, in the secret or in the open. That is who we are. So please let's not separate God from our secular dealings because Christ is our life.
So dear Pastors beware because indeed you are accountable for the souls of these ones who look up to you and trust your decisions as their spiritual leaders. I know some Pastors invite secular entertainers just to boost the numerical strength of their church but truth be told: the church is not about numbers, it's about salvation. Before God, church with 20 saved members far outweighs a church with 1000 unsaved members. Many are called, yet only 'few' are chosen...
