Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupted on Thursday, spewing molten rock and high levels of sulfur dioxide. So far 35 structures have been destroyed and about 1,700 people displaced.
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and has been erupting on and off for hundreds of thousands of years. Kilauea has been erupting continuously since 1983 with only occasional pauses of quiet activity.
High levels of toxic sulphur gas accompanies the lava. If there's a lot of sulfur blown consistently in the same direction, it can kill plants and cause respiratory failure in people — as well as etch eyeglasses or car windows.
There was no indication when the lava might stop or how far it might spread.
"There's more magma in the system to be erupted.
As long as that supply is there, the eruption will continue," US Geological Survey volcanologist Wendy Stovall said.
*Can't imagine how terrible these residents feel fleeing from their homes and having no hope about the possibility of seeing that home again coupled with losing their properties and the businesses. So sad for them.
