She reclined in her chair waiting for customers. It was 11am when I walked up to her.
"I've come to do my nails," I announced.
She stood up.
"Your finger or your toe nails?" she wanted to know.
"Just my finger nails," I replied
"It’s N400. For toe nails it costs N500."
I sat down to be attended to and in a matter of minutes we began talking.
Her name is Taibatu.
"What does Taibatu mean?" I quizzed. It was a beautiful name and I wanted to know.
"I don't know, " she said, smiling a bit.
"It’s my muslim name. My native name is Joke."
I
smiled. She is from Oyo State and had to stop at secondary school level because she had no one to sponsor her further. She went into the nail business in order
to fend for herself when she couldn’t continue with her education.
According
to Tai, nail fixing business is lucrative. She attends to at least 7 clients on
normal days and 10 during festive periods. When I inquired about the
start off capital, she told me it was as low as N2000 to kick start.
In her words, "You start small then you climb..."
Talk of the days of little beginnings.
Tai loves what she does and hopes to own her own salon and you never know be an employer too.
Her first love was hair making. So apart from nail fixing, she also is a
professional when it comes to braiding hair. Tai's story is rather
inspiring because she chose to do a decent business rather than tow the get rich quick lane. Did I say she is fair complexioned and beautiful?
