On Sunday, a 35 Y-O medical doctor who was returning from church was said to have jumped off the third mainland bridge in Lagos to his death.
It was reported that he stopped the driver in an excuse to urinate, came out of his Nissan SUV and jumped into the Lagoon.
You know when I read this, the first thing that came to my mind was 'why'? Why did he do it?
He was a medical doctor, had an SUV and a personal driver. In every human judgement he was doing well for himself. Yet despite it all, he committed suicide without hesitating.
He didn't think of those he would leave behind; his loved ones, his father, mother, siblings, his wife and children if he had any. He didn't consider that he would hurt them and he jumped!
Clearly it was not recession. Relationship issues? I don't know but one thing is obvious - the young man was troubled, so troubled it would make him kill himself without thinking twice.
There are so many people out there like this young man who appear to have a good life but go about depressed. True.
Sometimes, a simple show of love is what they require. Another thing it tells us is that having it all is not everything. Money is not everything.
You may have everything in the world and still be the loneliest and most depressed person on earth.
No wonder Paul encourages us to 'rejoice in the Lord always' (Phil 4:4). Rejoicing is a deliberate thing. Rejoicing in the Lord keeps depression away. Irrespective of our situation, let's learn to rejoice.
I am speaking to myself also. Don't allow a temporary situation put you down cos every problem has an expiry date!
And yes, show love. Forget he is a big man or a big woman; they need your love and attention. When you ask someone, "How are you doing?" mean it. Have every intention to know how they are faring and do it with a smile.
Love endlessly cos love has the power to save a life.
