Meet the real life mermaid, mermaid Melissa

She sees herself as a real life mermaid. Her name is Melissa Dawn but has legally changed it to Mermaid Melissa.

She is a blonde free diver and an aquatic performer enthralled with mythical creatures. To her being a mermaid isn't just a career but a lifestyle.

Melissa grew up in coastal Saint Augustine in Florida, USA, and by the age of 12, she could stay underwater for two and a half minutes. The average adult lasts for around 40 seconds.

Now she can hold her breath for about 5mins under water.

Melissa doesn’t go a day without donning her fish tails. In fact she has a bedroom full of sparkling fish tales - each one weighing a hefty 60lbs - the equivalent of a baby dolphin.

'I'm always living the mermaid lifestyle both in and out of the water,' she said. Her inspiration was drawn by Disney's little mermaid.

She works with killer whales, dolphins, sharks, stingrays, and performing in aquariums worldwide.

Melissa has been an aquatic performer for the past 10 years, an animal ambassador and now has an avid following with over one hundred million views on YouTube.
