Just musing about this Lassa fever epidemic and wondering why it has gotten so bad. A disease said to have been discovered in Lassa town of Borno State in 1969 is spreading and so far 17 States in Nigeria are said to be affected.
Lassa is caused by rats (natal multimammate mouse) and is transmitted to humans through food and household items contaminated by the rodents' excreta and urine.
But what I find baffling in all of this is that this same type of rats had naturally co-existed with us.This rat is no stranger to our homes, compound and neighborhood here in Nigeria. It's literally found everywhere, in some places it's even a delicacy, so how come the sudden outbreak? This is not the first time Nigeria has experienced Lassa outbreak.
Rat delicacy
With way these rats roam our environment, one should have thought that Lassa fever will be as common as catarrh but it's not. I hope you understand where I am getting at?
We have had diseases outbreak like this all over the world and it reminds me of where the Bible says in Matthew 24:7 that there’ll be natural disasters, famines, pestilences, earthquakes all over as sign of the last days. Pestilences according to the dictionary is a disease that cause many to die, a contagious or infectious epidemic disease that is virulent and devastating.
Like I said, I'm just musing, wondering if there is a spiritual significance in all of this. My heart goes to all the families affected by this disease and I also want to encourage you reading this: 'He keeps you safe from all hidden dangers and from all deadly diseases..'(Psalm 91:3)
Please read the entire Psalm 91. It's God's Word for you at this time. Believe it and fear not. Another thing, follow the given guidelines stipulated by the federal government about preventing Lassa fever 'cause when you do your part, God will do the rest. Let's pray for Nigeria, that Lassa fever will soon become a thing of the past. The God who halted Ebola will halt Lassa. Stay strong.
