Doctor narrates how a young man almost killed himself because of a girl

A doctor narrated this story on Quora:

Two years ago while I was on my surgery rotation, I was on call one evening when a young man of about 25years was rushed in. He had an injury to his thigh that was bandaged up and was limping on one leg.

So I started my history and he initially told me he sustained injuries from playing football 4 days earlier. So I tried to inspect the wound and opened up the bandage, just below it were layers of plaster. But I could feel a pulse over the plasters so I didn't proceed.

His mother was adamant that I dressed the wound and I insisted that she had to wait for the surgeon and I had to admit them, they got upset and decided to leave to go elsewhere. So I discharged them on request.

Three days later, same boy rushed in very late at night, looking very pale and weak and begging, “doctor please help me, please” he was burning up. So I commenced antibotics and pain meds and informed the surgeon on call. A surgery was booked for the next day.

That morning as I walked into the ward to take him into surgery, I met a terrible scene. Apparently, the young man had tried to open up the wound dressing because he felt discomfort and it got real bloody. 

What we knew that he didn't was that a femoral vessel was involved and the femoral vessels are really big, the pressure from the blood spurt was really bad, about 3 doctors trying to stop the bleeding were covered in blood. He was almost out cold. We started transfusion and he was quickly rushed into the ER.

I later came to discover that the injury wasn't an accident as claimed but was self inflicted. He had a disagreement with his mother over a girl he loved, he wanted to marry her but she wouldn't give her blessings so he decided to harm himself( maybe just a flesh wound) unfortunately, he hit something serious. And he nearly lost his life.

Good news is that the young man survived, and was often on the phone with the said girl( I had really wanted to see her, she didn't come though). Maybe their love was made in heaven… LoL.

As a doctor I've seen people get disabled or even lose their lives from a very bad decision, sometimes fights, even a dare.
