Heavy metal is called "Devil's music" but this particular church in Brazil uses it to preach the Word of God. They are called the Crash Church where heavy metal fans come to worship God through music.
The church looks more like an underground rock concert venue than a church. The attendees dress in dark colors and sport tattoos and piercings.
The pastor of Crash Church, pastor Antonio Batista said he opened the church based on God's instruction. He said, "I received a message from God, asking for my help in converting the rockers."
He goes on to explain, “This is part of God’s plan to cross barriers, which had a very closed-off format and were unable to reach many aspects of society."
Pastor Batista doesn’t wear any religious garments but jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. His arms are covered with colorful tattoos inspired by the Christian faith, and about a dozen piercings and earrings decorate his ears.
He reads the Gospel from behind a medieval-looking pulpit, while the congregation follows along on their cellphones, on TV screen showing the passages being read, or on regular bibles. They perform heavy metal songs between sermons.
