Abandoned malls |
Abandoned shops and houses with properties still in place |
Launderettes left behind in a hurry |
You can just imagine walking into a town where the traffic lights are still working but there are no cars around; a boutique or shopping mall completely empty but all the merchandise are still in place; money, gold and other valuable properties still in place, launderettes left behind as the residents were forced out the towns.
Not a single soul yet the traffic light works |
Here was what happened:
On March 11, 2011, the city of Fukushima was evacuated suddenly after the east coast of Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake followed by a huge tsunami. A 50ft wave swamped the sea wall at the Fukushima power plant, sparking equipment failures and allowing radioactive materials to escape - triggering the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
The residents had to be evacuated in a hurry following the major nuclear event and the area sealed off as a no-go red zone till date.
Pictures of the highly radioactive ghost towns were captured by photographer Keow Wee Loong thus risking his safety to get into the disaster site.
Abandoned cars |
He and two his friends snuck in by night to avoid being caught by the police. They visited four of the evacuated towns in Fukushima while being conscious of the limited time they had to explore the towns.
*Can't imagine the amount of valuables wasting in that place. Wow, wow!
