Someone asked: What can we do about rape? How do we bring an end to rape? What is the government or the law doing about rape?
And I ask, what can we do about fraud?
What can we do about kidnapping?
What can we do about murder, abortion and every single vice out there that haunts our society?
Unfortunately, nothing much because the battle is actually more spiritual than it is physical.
Even the law has not gone far in protecting it's citizens. Crimes are being committed daily. The government too can't do much either.
But did you notice that despite the laws in place, people still commit various crimes knowing fully well the implication of their actions🤷🏽♀? Why? The problem runs deeper than we make it.
The law can only check crime to an extent but it cannot totally abolish it.
Even if today the government rules that rapists should be castrated or killed, believe me people will still rape people. Recently a law was passed in a state in Nigeria which says that rapists should be castrated.
Why does the rape culture persist?
The problem is innate. Whatever is pushing them to commit these crimes supercedes their fear of going against the law, of the death penalty, or the fear of being jailed or castrated. They can't help it.
That problem is called the human nature or the sin nature.
In other words, the root of the problem of rape or any other vice is sin. It is engrafted in man's sin nature. And no matter how much we may try, if a problem is not taken care of from the very roots, it will resurface again and again.
That's why I said that the rape crisis and every other vices in our society is more of a spiritual thing than a physical thing. And because we are not going about it the right way, it will be impossible for it to go away completely.
So when you ask, "How can we do away with rape?" It's like asking, "How can we do away with sin?"
We already know the answer to that. God already gave us Jesus as the answer to sin.
The laws and constitution and the government of this world can't do away with rape and sin generally. It is the God's Constitution (the written Word) that has the ability and the power to do that.
Man needs more than just a law to keep him from committing crimes. He needs to be transformed from the inside to the outside. His mind needs to be renewed, his spirit needs to be reborn.
His sin nature ought to be dealt with for him to be able to live above sin and live according to God's will for him. And he can only do this in Christ.
It's sad to say that we live in a sinful world and as long as we are in it, evil will thrive.
There will always be rape, armed robbery, murder, peodophiles, fraud, corruption etc. These things are engrafted into the very nature and core system of this world.
The only way you can totally escape all of this is when you get to heaven🙂. Definitely not on this earth. An earth that has rejected God.
So that's why when you ask, "What can the law do? I will say, "Not very much."
But you can do something!
What you can Do
You can be that change you want to see in this world. Don't just wait for the law. You, as an individual, can do something to an extent as well.
It starts from changing your mindset to changing your habits, and being a positive influence on the people around you.
Do the safe and wise thing at all times.
👉 Because nobody has the right to rape you doesn't mean you should walk around stark naked. You will be inviting trouble to yourself.
👉Because going out alone late at night doesn't justify any man raping you, does it mean you should step out late in the night? Won't you be attracting trouble to yourself🤷🏽♀?
👉Because nobody has the right to rape you doesn't mean you should go to a club, get drunk and forget yourself. You only make yourself vulnerable!
You see eh, even with all these rape stories all over the place, someone is about to go and meet a man she has never met before in her life in another state, at a hotel. What is she doing? She is setting up herself for trouble!
All around us are people who are seeking for an opportunity to take advantage of you.
The Bible says, "Give no opportunity to the devil."
That's why I say, do your part. Don't create scenarios that will put you in trouble. Because I clearly understand that some rape incidences could have been very well avoided.
And this is not a blame game. It's the simple truth. People should know this and realize they also have a part to play.
I also know that there are many rape cases that has nothing to do with the victim being at the wrong place. The babies, the children, the old women etc that were raped are such cases.
Just like Barakat, a politician's pregnant wife was right inside the comfort of her house when some men came through the roof to rape and kill her. Was that her fault? No. It's pure evil and that's the world we live in.
And you ask what can be done about this? The law and the government can only do their bit. But we can only pray and trust God for His protection in the midst of this dark and sinful world, whilst doing our part.
Can we raise our children right? Can we build our home in God and on His Word?
Can we stop feeding on pornography?
Can we begin to change our mindsets by flooding it with God's Word and the right resources?
Can we begin to teach our children and students character?
When we do, we will begin to see the change we so desire. It starts from you and me.
As for the situations you can't control; those unforseen circumstances that come our way, let's give them to God who can control them. His Word is our anchor.
Let's trust God in these evil times and do what we can do as well.
